Health Issues

This site was updated on 17 April, 2008

The Dachshund Club of Queensland, like all similar clubs, is concerned about health issues which may affect dachshunds and in an effort to provide owners, breeders and all lovers of the breed with up to date information regarding the detection, treatment and prevention of known ailments, will now provide such information or links to other sites where such information can be found, on this site.

Bad Backs in Dachshunds

Questions relating to bad backs in dachshunds probably head the list of all enquiries received by dachshund owners and breeders. Rather than try and answer them on this page we will provide links to the sites that try and tackle this problem. The DCQ in no ways accepts responsibility for the content on any of the linked websites.

PROGRESSIVE RETINAL ATROPHY (PRA)
(courtesy Animal Health Trust (UK)

There is mounting concern in the dachshund community about retinal degeneration that occurs in many breeds of dogs, including dachshunds. This disease is caused by a change to a gene involved in sight. Fortunately the gene responsible has been identified at the Animal Health Trust in England and they have recently identified the mutation causing the disease in miniature long haired dachshunds. Using the information from this research, they have developed a DNA test for the disease. This test not only diagnoses dogs affected with this disease but can also detect those dogs which are carriers, showing no symptoms of the disease but producing affected pups.

There is currently no treatment for the disease.

For a full description of PRA CLICK HERE to go to the relevant AHT web page. Attention is also drawn to the final paragraph on that page where full details are listed regarding how to obtain swab kits for testing.

In order to assist in the eradication of this disease the Dachshund Club of Queensland is establishing a PRA register where miniature long haired dogs and bitches which have been tested and classified as either CLEAR or a CARRIER will be listed. Listing will only be done with the approval of the owners of the dogs (or bitches) and on sighting by the Secretary of the DCQ of the certificate issued by the relevant testing laboratory.

von Willebrand’s Disease (vWD)
(courtesy Animal Health Trust (UK)

von Willebrand's Disease (vWD) is a condition that may result in an animal to bleed. This bleeding may be of a varying tendency and severity between affected individuals. In dogs it may be an acquired condition associated with an underlying disease, but is most commonly seen as an inherited condition. Acquired forms of the disease are often susceptible to treatment of the underlying disease, the concentration of von Willebrand Factor (vWF) returning to normal in many cases.

For those animals with the inherited condition there is no possibility of a cure. When aware of a decrease in vWF concentration, informed breeders, owners and their veterinarians can be aware of the possibility of complications due to accident, injury and/or surgery and propagation of this trait can be reduced or eliminated by informed breeding decisions.
